Influences from TV: Case Histories

Everything that has influenced my webcomic Detective Fausto

I describe this BBC show as depressive and a series of random crimes.  But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad show, it makes an excellent show

Based on the novels by Kate Atkinson “Case Histories” has as protagonist Jackson Brodie an ex military ex cop turn in Private Investigator.
Haunted by the murder of his sister when he was a young boy, Jackson always tries to help everybody, which brings him more trouble with the police and his ex partner Louise Munroe
Murder young women, abused girls and violence in general surrounded Jackson, as he tries to do the right thing. But Jackson isn’t perfect his a little self destructive and emotional disattached to everybody except his daughter, who is moving to New Zealand.
6 episodes carefully produced with great performances and an amazing soundtrack (only female singers) that show us that solving crimes is heavy on a man soul, but there is always hope.

Influences from TV: Veronica Mars

Everything that has influenced my webcomic Detective Fausto

Veronica Mars took the “kid detective” concept updated and gave it a more realistic and criminal approach.

The show begins with Veronica investigating the murder of her best friend, the murder that ruined her life and her father’s life (ex sheriff). The blonde amateur detective is a social outcast, she is cynical and she doesn’t mind to push the good will of her father and best (and only) friend Wallace. She doesn’t stop until she obtains justice.
Gangs, drugs, money, corruption and family traumas surrounded her cases.

Veronica Mars was a great example (Being honest, I only watched the first two seasons. I lost interest in the “collage years”) of a “teen crime” show.
Oh! I forgot….Logan ♥

Where does Fausto lives?

Fausto Javier was born, raised and still lives in Guadalajara, Jalisco; México. (My hometown) If you know the city, you might recognize some of the places that Fausto visits.
His office, however; doesn’t exist. The building where his office is located is a mixing between Indepencia Ave. and José Fernando Abascal y Souza street.

His new apartment does exist; is in the Santa Tere neighborhood. I don’t know who actually lives there, but in fiction Fausto calls apartment 7 home.

Influences from TV: Terriers

Everything that has influenced my webcomic Detective Fausto
Versión en español
Terriers was a FX tv show, cancelled after one season, but still a wonderful show.

A couple of Private Investigators in San Diego, Hank and Britt are best friends who struggle to keep their agency afloat. The characters are interesting; Hank is an ex cop and an alcoholic in recovery who still is in love with his ex wife. In the other hand Britt is an ex thief trying to leave his criminal past behind him as plans a new life with his girlfriend.
In 13 episodes we see our protagonist deal with blackmailing, robbery and missing persons. The unifying arc is a real state fraud (ala Chinatown) treating to ruin their home town.
If you have the chance to watch, do it. You won’t regret it.

Influences from TV: Cra$h and Burn

Everything that has influenced my webcomic Detective Fausto

Cra$h and Burn was a Canadian tv show that only last a season, but what a season. The series mixes dark comedy, drama, romance and crime perfectly

The lead character Jimmy Burn  (Luke Kirby) is an insurance adjuster working for “Protected” that wants to be the company’s private eye. Soon we see how many corruption Jimmy has to lead with it, in and out of the company. He also has to lead with the Russian mafia, his fiancée Lucia, who doesn’t know about his past, and the company’s lawyer Catherine.
Jimmy was a juvenile delinquent, and is trying to forget the past and have a normal life, but the police and old friendships keep him away from his goal.
In 13 episodes we watch Jimmy get beaten, threaten, fired, re hired, and getting deeper in criminals dealings. While planning his wedding to Lucia.
There is a love triangle with the lawyer Catherine, a divorce with addiction problems, who sometimes seems to understand Jimmy better than anyone

The dark humor comes from mocking the Insurance Industry and their hypocrisy. Being set in Canada the series shows a cultural diversity different from the US shows. “Cra$h and Burn” had great performances, interesting storylines and a wonderful soundtrack. If you have the chance to see it, do it. It’s a gem.

246 pages

As I’m typing this, I had drawn  246 pages of Detective Fausto. This is how they look like:

As you can see, I’m not a professional illustrator and I’m not planning in become one. I started drawing this webcomic, because no one else would.
I believe I have improved my skills. Here the first page I did in February 2010, and the last page drawn this September.
Okay, maybe I haven't improved that much

I have planed out the release dates for the rest of the year, and I’m ahead schedule, but I still need to draw 200 pages more.
Like I said before, I’ve got a plan and I’m determine to do it right. That’s my promise to me and to you, dear reader.

Remember you can download free in PDF and cbr format Volume 01: Blackmail, Volume 02: Cleopatra’s Case and Origen.
